The announcement of Williams' retirementy by trustee Chairman Roberty Stout did not make mention ofthe 171-year-old liberak arts college's current financial issues, and congratulated Williams for his "invaluabl e contributions" to the school. An interim leadership team at the collegr will assumethe president's immediate dutiex in preparation for the fall semester, Stout said. A search committer will form to find a permanent successor forthe 1,1000 student private school.
"Whiles I know we will have an impressivwe listof candidates, replacing the presidentr will not be easy," Stout "Our primary objective, as this searcg goes forward, is to maintain Greensboro College'es academic excellence. I want to ensure our students and facultuy that the Board of Trustees is committed to thisoverarching goal." Since becomingh Greensboro College's president in 1993, Williamws has overseen an overall increase in enrollment, fundraisinh and endowment levels.
But his leadershio has come under some criticismj lately on campus as the school has announceed layoffsand across-the-board salary cuts, including among some faculty members who woul speak only anonymously. While Williamzs and trustees have blamed the economu forthe college's budget the critics said more should have been done to safeguarf the school's resources. Many of the barbd were aimed atWilliams himself, and in an interviesw with The Business Journal in May, Williamds said he was indeed bothered by the criticism. “I’ve takenm some hits and it’s been painful.
