The Dow Jones industrial average lost 161 pointd to closeat 8,164, its lowes t point since April 28. The S&l 500 index lost 18 points to closweat 881, its lowest point since May 1. The Nasdaqq fell 41 points to close at its lowest point sinceMay 27. Stocks have been slowly sliding for nearly a month following a big surgew inthe spring. Tuesday’s sell-off came amid talk in Washingto n about the possibility of a seconds major economicstimulus package. The start of the quarterly reportingperiod -- which unofficially will kick off after the close Wednesday with the report from -- also is putting investors in a less-than-confidenft mood.
Most second-quarter numbers are expected to come in below and economic reports in recent weeks indicatre the recession is farfrom over. Amontg Arizona stocks, Tempe-based (Nasdaq:LCC) saw shares tumble more than 6 percent Tuesdat to closeat $2.212 a share.
